I work for a cable company as a technician. I see lots of televisions. I was fortunate enough to observe most brands of TVs before buying my own. I have this television and let me just say honestly, after seeing thousands of televisions, with and without HD, with component cables and HDMI and DVI, I can tell the difference between 1080p and 720p from a distance. It's slight but, there is a difference. That tiny difference, like a previous reviewer said, is totally not worth $700. I paid $700 for my TV brand new (even though the company I bought it from tried to pawn a dented one off on me). I couldn't see how paying $1400 for the 1080p could be justified. WCS, I have the TV for 5-7 years, it dies and then, by that time, 1440p will be the big thing and I'll be able to pick up a 1080p TV for a handful of nickels and a firm hand shake!
PS... Cable tip: This should work on any HD cable boxes from Charter, Comcast or Cox.
1) Press the CABLE button on the remote. Then press the POWER.
2) Wait two seconds after pressing the POWER button and press the MENU
3) In this screen, you should be able to adjust your HD settings from the cable box to work better your TV. Not all techs know this but you do! If you want your HD to be crazy insane, do this because chances are the settings are 720i by default. Or 480p which is standard def. It also may change your screen size. Play with it like I did to find the best settings. To exit the screen, just press the POWER button. If I come to your house and you pull this little factoid out of your butt on me, I will put you in a figure 4 in front of your kids. And These are the breaks.

I purchased this HDTV from Amazon in February after months and months of research. After reading about and looking at LCD and Plasma sets, I decided to go with the Samsung 720p plasma. I like being able to view from any angle, the TV is in a room which can be brightly lit from the sun streaming through the windows, and there is no glare. The most important thing to me is the picture, it is amazing! The colors are vivid and clear. My daughter has a 55-inch LCD Vizio 1080p,she paid much more than I did for her set but the picture on my Samsung beats the Vizio hands down. Its hooked up to a Sony Blu-Ray player. I'm a big movie fan so watching blu-ray or dvd movies on this TV is awesome! The TV arrived before the expected date, the delivery company people were great, no problems at all. Set up was easy, the only help I needed was getting it on the stand. It's been 4 months now and I haven't had any issues with this TV. I highly recommend this product and would purchase again.
Don't let the 720 resolution fool you -- this is a fantastic TV May 09, 2010
I was concerned that 720p would be too low a resolution for such a large monitor. However, this was affordable, and so I got it. And WOW -- let me tell you that this is just about the best deal going. A fantastic 50" under $800 that has incredible performance and quality.
I would HIGHLY recommend this monitor. Don't let the 720p resolution get you down, it upconverts beautifully to 1080i through my BlueRay player (watched Avatar and it was breathtaking). My AppleTV looks STUNNING. And my HD Cable box shows it off as well.
I used to not have religion on Plasma vs. LED. However, I do now. Plasma looks more cinematic. LED looks too "realistic" -- everything is too "perfect" and it ends up by looking fake. Plasma is a far more realistic cinematic experience. I am not concerned about burn-in and at this price, I'll take the risk (which I believe to be miniscule). I am a plasma convert from this day forward.
Also -- spend good money on speakers for a truly great experience. I spent $1,200 on Definitive Technology speakers, $600 for a Denon receiver. Then with this TV, I had a world-class home theater system for under $2,500.
Buy this TV. You will NOT be disappointed.

 Plasmas were good but fading fast. Mar 30, 2010
Actually no the 600hz has nothing to do with the speed of the plasma, and is different technology all together. Plasmas have a layer of protective film over them that make the screen look a bit dull, or in the background if you will. The glossy effect is much like the HP monitors for computers, they look great and have that shiney glass effect, but at viewing angles you get a horrible yellowish picture, now if it swivels ok, LCDs and LEDs are much more efficient and the pictures can't be beaten. Also the new fluid motion of the 120hz and 240 is amazing, makes you sick at first but once you watch it your hooked. Also with the naked eye they say you can't tell the difference in Plasmas and LCDs, wrong. My 1080p 37 inch Vizio blew my parents Panasonic 42 inch out of the water, with blu ray, games and just overall, now granted it was a few years old i could kind of understand, but even in the beginning they were always less than impressed with it. Plasmas are/were good for the time, but that time has passed.
Btw blu ray is where the 1080p kicks in, if you don't believe me try it out, most stores won't let you and thats the deal, they hook up crappy cable channels and rarely let you see what its all about, 1080p may be useless to regular dvd users, standard cable and even some gamers. But to me it makes all the difference in the world, and why go backwards with technology that is already on its way out. If you want cheap, buy cheap, if you want the best you have to pay the money, and believe me, (most of the time) and in this case its definitely worth it.

great tv ( but i had to get it from an other vendor )
when the tv finally arrived ( 2 weeks late) the white glove service amazon promised was a delivery guy who spoke no english.
I pluged the tv in, it exploded in a puff of smoke
( I found out later that the tv should have been at room temp. when pluged in)
Amazon took it back but did not have one to replace it. I had to buy one from an other vendor for 100.00 more and wait over a month for a refund from Amazon.
Amazon offered be nothing for all of the time I wasted and money spent.
I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM AMAZON AGAIN
