very good product for the $ Mar 19, 2010 Can't beat the price for the product. Does everything you need it to. One word of advice, get the portable stand for the unit so you can rest it on dashboard and it does not slide. The suction cup it comes with works fine but I don't like to advertise I have a portable GPS to steal when my truck is parked. The stand can be placed on the seat with the GPS attached to it when not using, works great for me.
Stutters, totally unuseable. 3 RMAs later got a 265wt. Mar 16, 2010 First unit stuttered so much it was barely useable. Maps, directions, etc. were all fine, but the voice directions were so broken it was pathetic. The 2nd and 3rd 255ws did the exact same thing. I finally convinced Garmin it was broken on the 3rd RMA and they sent me a 265wt instead. That one works. Save yourself the hassle and don't get this model.
After using for 8 months, conclusion: Awful. Mar 16, 2010 Never before have I been this frustrated with a GPS.
Points that drive me nuts:
* horrendous UI - why the hell would they not have a button that instantly takes you back to the main menu? Sometimes it takes you 4-5 layers of navigation just to get back to the god damn main menu! Even just changing the volume takes you 2-3 layers. Turning on/off traffic rules takes 3-4. Whoever designed the UI was a usability retard.
* Input lag. God awful lag. You can enter characters at about - 1 letter per second. Go any faster, the unit will inconsistently drop parts of your input. And even worse, you DELETE at about the same rate. It's frustrating thinking you precisely deleted the last 2 characters, when actually, the touchscreen registered 4 deletes, and the unit keeps on deleting while you're trying to input again.
* bootup time: takes about a full 30-45 seconds to boot up. Come on Garmin, we're paying $100+. WHY CAN'T THEY SPEND 25 MORE CENTS TO UPGRADE THE CPU!?!?
* splash page. After the unit boots up, there's a disclaimer page warning you not to use the GPS while driving. No way to disable this useless page.
* update speed. awful. If you miss a turn, it'll take about 4 blacks before the unit says "recalculating". On top of that, will take about 5-10 seconds to recalculate, at which point, you've driven far past where the unit is recalculating from. Pretty much, if you miss a turn, you have to immediately park, and wait until the unit reorients itself and recalculate.
* biggest source of frustration. When you first start off, the unit will say "please drive to selected route". It will NOT give you turn by turn directions AND, if you drive off in the opposite direction, the GPS WILL NOT RECALCULATE until it's about 1/3 mile away. This is fairly easy to do if you're driving opposite and parallel to the "selected route" on the screen.
I would not recommend this GPS to anyone. While the unit itself is pretty, functionality-wise, this is one of the worst products I have ever used.
Fits the bill Mar 15, 2010 My husband researched GPS systems and felt this was the best buy for the money. So now we both have one for our jobs in home health. I really like it. No frills or fancy stuff, unless you want it. I like that I can save addresses for my clients. No more studying the paper map for how to get around. I love it.
It does everything I wanted it to do and more Mar 15, 2010 I like the size of the screen. It's easy to use the touch pad for entering addresses. I really like that the voice directions tell me what to expect in the future. Gives me time to plan and know what to expect. Great price too.
